But why one may ask?

In short - environment friendliness. Black pixels apparently take up less energy than white on the old CRT monitors. According to Heap Media (the company behind this website) if we all made websites in dull colours we could reduce our CO2 emissions. Although this may not be significant for laptops where the back-lighting is done with LEDs, Heap media believes every little helps.
